About Mason Monson

From Multi-Sport Athlete to Golf Coach

Mason Monson’s coaching journey began early—at just 12 years old, he was coaching tee-ball and leading Senior League baseball practices. A natural athlete, he played nearly every sport growing up, including baseball, tennis, soccer, hockey, football, and basketball. But at 16, golf became his true passion.

The Early Years: From High Scores to Low Handicaps

Mason knows what it’s like to struggle on the golf course. As a freshman, he shot over 110 in his first match. But instead of giving up, he dedicated himself to improvement—practicing two to three hours a day, playing four times a week, and taking weekly lessons. By age 19, his hard work paid off—he had improved to a 1 handicap and became the youngest club champion at Bass Lake Country Club.

College & Corporate Career

Mason pursued a business degree at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, choosing academics over collegiate golf. After graduating in 2002, he built a successful career at Principal Financial Group, becoming a Relationship Manager and national speaker on retirement plan design, financial modeling, and best practices. Even in the corporate world, his love for golf never faded—he hosted weekly group golf classes for colleagues, leading range sessions, on-course play, and putting competitions in the office.

A Life-Changing Decision

In 2021, after the tragic passing of his father, Mike Monson, in a car accident, Mason made a life-changing decision—to pursue his passion for coaching golf full-time. His father had introduced him to the game, and golf was a source of some of his most cherished memories. He wanted others to experience that same joy and fulfillment on the course.

Mason entered the PGA Professional Golf Management Program and began his coaching career at Glen Ivy Golf Club as an Assistant Golf Pro before moving to Victoria Club, where he began teaching.

Coaching Transformation: Results-Based Coaching

Early in his coaching career, Mason noticed a common problem—his students were great range players, but their improvements weren’t translating to lower scores on the course. Sound familiar?

Determined to find a better way, Mason connected with Golf Hall of Fame Teacher Will Robins in Fall 2023 and began studying Results-Based Coaching. This refined coaching philosophy changed everything. Instead of just hitting balls on the range, Mason’s students began practicing with purpose, focusing on weaknesses, and applying strategies that led to lower scores on the course. The results were undeniable.

Accredited Scoring Method Coach

In September 2024, Mason became a Scoring Method Accredited Coach, completing the 100 Shot Challenge—where seven of his students collectively dropped over 100 strokes using The Scoring Method.
